Red Hand - Workshop in Uganda

Red Hand – Workshop at Rainbow House Of Hope Uganda
It was on Saturday 13th, August 2011 at 10:00AM when we had a work shop on a campaign against child soldier at new Rainbow House of Hope. Lisa a good friend of Rainbow House of Hope from Germany was the facilitator and she asked us whether we knew anything about child soldier, we all didn't have any idea apart from one boy called Junior who said that he read it in Newspapers that in Somalia there are many child soldiers and they are dying innocently because of fighting in civil wars when they are still young. The facilitator asked us to divide ourselves into three groups A, B, C and brain storm on the definition of child soldier. Group A said that child soldier means when a child is taken to fight governmental war. Group B said when a child is under 18 years and is forced to fight for the country in civil wars.
My group was C and got the definition as, a child is a person under 18 years and a soldier is a person who fights for the country. Therefore the general definition we got was that a person under 18 years who is taken willingly or forced to go and fight for the country. And the facilitator's definition that she got from UNICEF was that a child soldier is a person under 18 years and is taken willingly or forced to go and work as potters, cooks and sometimes for sexual purposes during civil wars.
After knowing the definition she asked us to get the positive and negative results of being a child soldier and these were some of the results; colonizing new areas, security, source of income, defensive skills are learnt at early age and negative effects were loss of lives, displacement, and loss of morals, drug abuse and psychological torture.
After we had approached the topic theoretically, Lisa introduced us to the Red Hand Campaign against the Use of Child Soldiers. It was a very nice ending of the workshop and we enjoyed it very much to become part of the international protest against child soldiers. We wish that our votes will be heard.
Thank you Lisa for this wonderful workshop. And we promise that we shall continue campaigning against child soldiers in schools and other places.
